SANEA Thinking Energy - Energy & Mobility - 22 February 2018

Energy and Mobility

The South African National Energy Association’s (SANEA) energy dialogue, as part of the Africa Energy Indaba Week, is designed to create a platform to initiate discussions on a very important, emerging international trend that has already started to affect the country and could have further significant impacts.

A massive wave of transformation is underway in the mobility sector globally and is starting to gather momentum locally. In a relatively short period of time there have been significant technological breakthroughs in powering of vehicles, which, together with smart digital technologies, will change the way we travel and move bulk goods. Globally the transport sector contributes around 20% of CO2 emissions and with the COP 21 targets aiming for a 60% worldwide CO2 reduction by 2050, the need to mitigate environmental impacts to achieve more sustainable options will require a massive change to the mobility sector from how it currently exists.

The obvious link between energy and mobility has largely been confined to liquid fuels as the primary fuel source for vehicles themselves, with electricity and gas as manufacturing inputs. This situation is set to change with a variety of other energy forms being used to power vehicles in the future and consequential impact on the infrastructure systems that will be needed to enable this new sustainable mobility environment.

One of the key considerations in unfolding a changing mobility landscape is the need to ensure that the system energy balance is maintained. Understanding the positive and negative impacts and building on or mitigating these as necessary, will be essential to achieve a flexible, agile and sustainable mobility system.

Recognising this disruptor, SANEA is pioneering a much-needed public dialogue on what future mobility choices are facing South Africa, what critical infrastructure enablers are needed to facilitate the transition to the future mobility systems and how plans to manage the risks and consequences can be developed for the benefit of South Africa as a whole.

This dialogue will provide a platform to catalyse energy thinking on a very topical issue; one that can have significant positive and negative outcomes for SA and one which cuts across several energy sectors and industries while raising infrastructure issues. Value will be delivered from information sharing, robust discussion and soliciting broad participation from key sector players on the main issues to be covered during the dialogue.

Key focus areas of the dialogue

While recognising that the Energy and Mobility issues are wide and varied, SANEA is spearheading this kick off conversation that will focus this dialogue on:
• Exposing international perspectives and trends through SANEA’s association with the World Energy Council
• Hearing from key industry participants about how the sector is evolving, specifically in the local context, and what is needed to advance the development of this disruptor
• Starting to understand available and evolving alternatives, their level of development and if there are any winners emerging, especially for application in South Africa?
• Understanding the future policy, regulation and infrastructure changes that are needed to promote and support mobility mode and system changes
• Opening the dialogue to participants in focussed interactive sessions where the transition drivers and key risks can be deliberated

Who should attend?

•All participants in the energy sector that will be impacted by the new developments in technology and energy usage in the mobility sector
• All participants in the transport sector faced with this disruptor and having to understand what some of the future developments will be
• Entrepreneurs and business developers whose creative thinking about solutions for this change could be stimulated
• Youth and emerging talent who are keen to be part of unfolding South Africa’s future business and infrastructure landscape
• Government departments and policy makers will get to exchange information and ideas on how these changes will unfold from a policy perspective and what will be needed to underpin a seamless and sustainable transition
