SABS and SAIEE partner to promote stakeholder participation in the development of National Standards

The South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) is empowered by the Standards Act to develop, maintain and promote South African National Standards (SANS). SABS is required to ensure that all South African stakeholder groups are represented in the standards development process in order to develop relevant standards, based on balanced needs and input of all stakeholders.

Recognising the need to strengthen stakeholder participation, SABS has entered into partnerships with a number of organisations to diversify its public engagement platforms. It is against this background that SABS has partnered with the South African Institute of Electrical Engineers (SAIEE), to encourage SAIEE stakeholder comments and feedback. SAIEE members will be able to participate in the following ways:

· comment on proposals received by the SABS for the development of new standards;

· be involved in the drafting of standards before publication as well as

· receive news about standards, and

· indicate an interest in joining relevant standards development technical committees.

From October 2017, SABS will publish these standards documents and invite comments from all stakeholders who have an interest in or are impacted by national standards. These entities include Government Departments, Regulators, Private Sector Institutions, Academic and Research Institutions, Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs), Professional bodies, Consumers and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), in all sectors of the South African economy.
