OVERVIEW :

The course is designed to provide a high-level insight into optical fibres, cables & systems technologies based on the work undertaken by the International Telecommunications Union - Telecommunications Standardisation Sector (ITU-T) and in particular ITU-T Study Group 15.
The course provides a basic overview of the evolution of optical fibres, cables & systems and highlights the key strategic ITU-T Recommendations that need to be considered when designing, engineering & operating optical fibres, cables & systems.

OBJECTIVES : The course aims to :

  • Provide an overview of the ITU-T Study Group 15 optical fibres, cables & systems technology standard activities & associated Standards Development Organisations & Industry for a (SDO/For a) projects
  • Illustrate the enormous progress in optical fibres, cables & systems technologies realised over the 40-year period extending from 1975 which is grouped in several distinct phases
  • Highlight the key characteristics & attributes of optical fibres that need to be considered when designing the physical optical layer
  • Describe the general characteristics of the optical fibre cables & what optical fibre cable structures options are available for deployment in the optical network
  • Introduce & describe the active & passive optical components
  • Outline the general specification criteria used in ITU-T for describing optical interfaces. The general strategic objective of all ITU-T optical interface Recommendations is to achieve interworking among equipment from different manufacturers
  • Highlight the various applications of the optical systems in the various parts of the Optical Transport Network

Note : Please note that this course does not cover the details of the ITU-T Optical Transport Network (OTN). A course on this can be scheduled based on demand from the telecoms-ICT Industry.
