Cigré's scope covers two broad areas :
Technology of high voltage equipment making up the electrical part of hydraulic and thermal power stations, overhead lines, insulated cables and substations.
The development of transmission and interconnection systems
Problems related to protection of the systems and to telecontrol and telecommunication equipment are also part of Cigré's area of concern. Cigré brings together high level experts who are confronted every day with problems related to planning Construction and Operation of HV and EHV electric systems.

Who are Cigré members ?
Cigré includes 3 categories of members :
Collective members who are administrative bodies, scientific or technical organisation, research institutes and public or private companies of industrial and/or commercial character
educational institutions
Individual members, professional in the engineering teaching or research activities

ELECTRA, a bilingual (French / English) journal issued every two months which publishes the results of work performedby the cigre study committees. it provides members with a unique source of information on themes of vital interest to professionals in this field.

How does Cigré work ?
Technical work is carried out within 15 Study Committees. The task of these Committees is to initiate and co-ordinate studies contributing to technical advance in their particular area.
Moreover they are the major actors in Plenary Session and select the Preferential Subjects to be discussed during these Sessions. These subjects relate to current problems resulting from technical institutional evolution of the Electricity Supply Industry. Membership of these Study Committees consists of well-known experts who are nominated by the Governing Bodies of Cigré for a period of 6 years. Their term of office may be renewed for two-year periods if need be.
Working Groups, which include other experts, are formed whose task is to delve further into a particular topic.
Study Committees
The objectives of the Cigré Study Committees are :
the promotion and exchange of information on all aspects within their fields of activity
the organisation and carrying out of studies for promoting technical progress and extending our knowledge base. Information exchange is achieved by participation in the Sessions, Symposia, Colloquia and Regional Meetings and by publications.
