THE HISTORICAL SECTION:

THE SECTION COMMITTEES:
The term "electrical engineer" is used by the Institute as a collective term embracing all fields in which electronic engineering, electromechanical engineering, measurement, computation and control as well as any other field involving the design, development, provision and maintenance of plant, apparatus or equipment using, generating or transmitting electricity is applied in the service of mankind.
In order to cater for this wide range of subjects specialist sections have been established to cater for the specialised technical interests of members.
The Section Committees perform vital functions within the Institute. They organise paper presentations, conferences, seminars, workshops and visits which are the life-blood of the Institute. They also provide forums at which important subjects can be discussed and are often requested by Council to deal with matters of importance. The committees meet once per month and the Chairmen attend the Council meeting on the first Friday of each month (except January).
THE ELECTRONICS AND SOFTWARE SECTION:
The subjects that are covered by the E&S Section Committee are as follows: Semi-conductor devices, radio, microwave and transmission systems, radar systems, antennas, telephone switching systems, digital communications, fibre optics, micro electronics and medical electronics. Measuring instruments and techniques, computers, software, computation, processing and control systems are also covered.
The committee is responsible for nominating experts for the technical committees of the South African Bureau of Standards in the field of electronics and telecoms.
THE POWER SECTION:
The Power Section Committee emphasis is on the generation, transmission, distribution and utilization of electrical energy. The committee is responcible for nominating experts for the SABS technical committees in the Power field.
