Members are professionally engaged in the full range of engineering activities, including academic research, manufacturing, electronics, telecommunications, measurement and control, mining, and power infra-structural services. Members make meaningful contributions to the quality of life of the community and to the steady advancement of technology. Their efforts are acknowledged in many countries of the world.
The Institute contributes to the common interests and welfare of the whole engineering fraternity through close co-operation with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA)

Memorandum to members of the AMEU - Government Certificate of Competence
MEMORANDUM TO MEMBERS OF THE AMEU
GOVERNMENT CERTIFICATE OF COMPETENCE: Invitation to apply for financial assistance from the AMEU The AMEU has entered into an agreement with the LGSETA for funding of study material and study support for a number of persons wishing to prepare to write the Government Certificate of Competency (Factories) examinations.
Applications are therefore requested from suitably qualified and experienced employees of local authority electricity distributors, which are AMEU members of good standing, to be considered for this funding support. The facility has been arranged to assist AMEU members in improving their skills base of Certificated Engineers. Many will be aware of the value, apart from the legal requirements of the Occupation Health and Safety Act (OHS Act, Act No.85 of 1993, as amended), of having GCC trained engineers in their organization. Interested persons wishing to submit an application should note the following requirements:
Step 1 - Apply for permission to write the exam with the Department of Labour. In order to obtain permission to write the examinations, you require: 1. A degree in mechanical or electrical (heavy current) engineering; including B.Tech or; 2. An S4 in mechanical or electrical engineering with the acceptable subjects or; 3. A National Diploma N6 in mechanical or electrical engineering with the acceptable subjects. 4. A signed off report showing 2 years of acceptable practical experience (post apprenticeship for N6). Step 2 - The department will issue you with a letter of permission.
Step 3 - Submit a copy of the letter of permission to the AMEU Secretariat at ameu@vdw.co.za for the attention of Jean Venter. A letter signed by the Head of the Electricity Department of the applicant’s municipality, confirming the applicant’s position within the organization and support for his/her undertaking the course of study is also required.
Step 4 - AMEU Secretariat will assess all applications received within the financial limits of the LGSETA funding and will arrange the study material for successful applicants directly with Veasey’s Engineering College.
Step 5 – Successful applicants will be expected to apply themselves to the study material and use the support structures offered by Veasey’s.
Step 6 - Enrol for the GCC Exam at your nearest FET College.
Step 7 – Write Exam
Examination information: 1. Duration: Two 3 hour exams – “Legal Knowledge” and “Plant” in June and November. 2. Either or both exams may be taken at any one time. 3. Both exams must be passed within three years of each other. 4. The pass mark is 50%. 5. Both exams are ‘closed book’. 6. For more detailed information visit the Commission of Examiners website.
