INTERNET OF THINGS (IoT) STANDARDS AND APPLICATIONS

The course is designed to provide a high-level insight into the Internet of Things (IoT) based on the work undertaken by the IoT standard development organisations (SDO’s and IoT Industry Forums) e.g. ITU-T Study Group 20, ETSI 3rd Generation Partnership Project 3GPP, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers - IEEE, Internet Engineering Task Force - IETF, etc.
The course provides a basic overview of the IoT reference model which consists of the:
1. Application layer: Business and Consumer IoT Use Cases
2. Service and application support layer: IoT Platforms - Middleware, Database, Processing, Aggregation, Network / Device Management, etc.
3. Networks layer: GSM 3G, LTE 4G, CDMA 3G, LoRa, Sigfox, LTE-M, Weightless
4. Device Layer: devices, gateways, sensors, actuators, IoT Network, Short-Range Technologies – Wi-Fi, Zigbee, wHART, Bluetooth, NFC, RFID, Z-Wave, MiWi. Etc.
Each of the layers is decomposed as far as requirements, capabilities and use cases are concerned.
Management, security and Interconnect generic and specific requirements are covered in the course.
2.1 Module 1: Internet of things standards activities
IoT standards project activities taking place at ITU-T Study Group 20, ETSI, oneM2M, 3GPP, Open Mobile Alliance (OMA), IEEE, IETF, World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).
2.2 Module 2: Overview of the Internet of things.
Introduction of the IoT. Fundamental characteristics and high-level requirements of the IoT. IoT reference model.
2.3 Module 3: Internet of Things (IoT) Use Cases
Cold Chain Management Service. Sensor Network Monitoring Service. Smartphone as a Sink Node (SPSN) for commercial merchant service. SPSN for environment-monitoring services. Physical Security Video Surveillance Application Requirements. Emergency Alerting. Data Acquisition. Gateway in home, automotive telematics, and online collaborative whiteboard services. Healthcare Services. e-Health. Tsunami warning service. Motorcade management. Smart Home. Integration with Internet Services. SPSN use for wearable smart devices.
2.4 Module 4: Requirements of the network for the Internet of things.
General description of the network for the IoT. Requirements of the network for the IoT. Examples of use cases of smart meters and sensors. Access network and IoT area network technologies.
2.5 Module 5: Common requirements and capabilities of device management in the IoT.
Requirements of device management in the IoT. Common capabilities of device management in the IoT.
2.6 Module 6: Framework of constrained device networking in the IoT environments
Overview of constrained device networking in the IoT environments. Communication features and attributes. Constrained device network architectures. Functional requirements of constrained device networking. Network scalability in constrained devices. Mechanism for providing network stability through IP continuity of NFC devices in the Internet.
2.7 Module 7: Short-Range and Wide- Area IoT Technologies
LONG RANGE / LOW B/W : LoRa, Sigfox, LTE-M, Weightless. LONG RANGE / HIGH B/W: GSM 3G, LTE 4G, CDMA 3G.
SHORT RANGE / LOW B/W: NFC, RFID, Z-Wave, MiWi. SHORT RANGE / HIGH B/W: WiFi, Zigbee, wHART, Bluetooth.
Short-Range and Wide-Area Technologies Protocol Stack.
2.8 Module 8: IoT Strategy and Business Opportunities
Practical and tutorial covering Technical Overview of the Internet of Things (IoT), IoT Market Opportunity Analysis, Recommended Use Cases Service Description Examples and IoT Business Model Recommendations.
