SAIEE Covid-19 Measures Communication

17 March 2020

The novel Corona virus (COVID 19) has recently been named as a pandemic by the WHO due to the rate of infections worldwide. For the foreseeable future, the threat remains real with numbers rising daily in South Africa. On the 15th of March 2020 the President of the republic announced overarching measures meant to combat the spread of the virus. Amongst those was that COVID-19 has been declared a national disaster with strict travel restrictions and gatherings of people more than 100 prohibited. The institute also has a duty to act responsible and be seen to be part of the solution in curbing the spread of COVID-19 in line with the country’s directive.

Health officials and scientists have indicated that it is of the utmost importance that countries slow down the transmission of the virus and therefore we believe that it is in the best interest of the members of the SAIEE to stop all gatherings irrespective of their size until further notice. Despite this, we also would like to ensure that we continue to provide service to our members and consequently the decision has been taken to implement the following measures:

a. The AGM scheduled for 26th March 2020 will be cancelled as a physical event and replaced with an online event, details of which are currently being worked and will be communicated in the next few days.

b. The holding of physical Committee and Council Meetings will also be suspended and replaced using online facilities. Committee Chairpersons are requested to contact Leanetse Matutoane to discuss possible options and to be allocated time slots should their requirement be to use SAIEE’s licensed online platforms such as zoom or WebinarJam.

c. Sections and Centres are also instructed to suspend all physical events until further notice and should they wish to replace these events with online facilities they are also requested to contact Leanetse Matutoane to discuss possible options and to be allocated timeslots should there be a requirement to use the Institute’s licensed online platforms like zoom or WebinarJam.

d. The holding of physical CPD-accredited training courses has also been suspended until further notice and a solution to hold these as an effective online event is currently under investigation and will be communicated in due course.

Your understanding regarding the measures taken by the SAIEE in light of the COVID-19 pandemic is appreciated. Stay safe and healthy.
