1. OVERVIEW

The course starts with an overview of low voltage circuit breakers and the fundamental requirements for the application of the circuit breakers in practice. It then follows with the different types of medium and high voltage circuit breakers, and the methods applied for effective arc extinction. The requirements for switchgear to be certified as Internal Arc Rated switchgear, are also addressed before finally looking at the role and application in coordination of protection systems, as well as the basic maintenance requirements of circuit breakers.

PRESENTER

PROF. J.J. (JERRY) WALKER - DTech, BTech

Prof. Walker started his career as an Apprentice Millwright at Iscor Vanderbijlpark. He completed his National Higher Diploma in Engineering (Electrical) at Vaal Triangle Technikon in 1986. After spending almost 23 years in industry, in 1993 he joined Vaal Triangle Technikon (now known as Vaal University of Technology) as a lecturer in the Dept. of Power Engineering. Prof. Walker then went on to complete his BTech degree in 1996, and thereafter, started with his post-graduate studies in the specialisation of diagnostic testing of XLPE-insulated cables. Prof. Walker completed his DTech degree in 2004 at Vaal University of Technology. The title of his Doctoral Thesis: “Diagnostic Evaluation of Water Tree Aged XLPE-Insulated Cables”. In 2005 , Prof. Walker was appointed as Associate Professor, and Head of Institute for High Voltage Studies at VUT. Prof. Walker retired from Vaal University of Technology in 2006. Presently, Prof. Walker is Director of his own company - WALMET TECHNOLOGIES (PTY) LTD, and visiting Professor at Vaal University of Technology in the management of Research and in supervision of Post Graduate students in Power Engineering.
