Network Frequency Control with Increasing Renewable Power Plants

1. OVERVIEW

The introduction of intermittent non-dispatchable, renewable energy power plants, specifically wind and solar PV, has introduced a new dynamic in controlling network frequency for system operators worldwide.

This two-day course is an introduction to the basics of frequency control, with specific reference to the impact of these renewable power plants.

The course will provide the fundamentals of network frequency control, technical limitations of traditional power plants, storage options and review what is happening internationally. It will provide a basic understanding of generation scheduling and dispatch, real time balancing of supply and demand, frequency control with increasing wind and solar PV penetration.

Practical examples will be provided throughout the course including studies done for off grid and small islands. Topical questions will be explored, such as: “How are Pacific Islands achieving more than 50% renewable penetration”, “How do Spain and Ireland intend achieving 50% renewable energy?”, “How did Portugal manage to operate for 4 days on renewable energy alone?”, and “What are the renewable penetration possibilities for South and Southern Africa?”

PRESENTER

 

Dr Graeme Chown is a power systems control and operations specialist with over 30 years’ experience in the electricity industry. He has extensive experience in power system operations, generation scheduling and dispatch, interconnected operations, electricity markets, electricity regulation, ancillary services, energy storage, transmission pricing, power system studies and power system modelling, and power station control.

 

Graeme’s MSc and PhD were both on the topic of network frequency control. He has worked on network frequency control and integration of renewable energy plants in: Abu Dhabi, Bermuda, Ethiopia, Ghana, Ireland, Kenya, Malawi, Mauritius, Pacific Islands of Samoa, Tonga, Majuro, Pohnpei, Kosrae, Chuuk & Yap, Southern Africa, Tanzania, Thailand, the UK and Vietnam.
