ABOUT CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Following extensive consultation with voluntary associations and other stakeholders in the engineering industry, a formal system for recording Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for practitioners was established and implemented on 1 January 2006.
CPD now serves as the basis for all registered practitioners to renew their registration with ECSA. Section 22(1) of the Engineering Profession Act, 2000 (Act 46 of 2000) requires practitioners to apply for renewal in the prescribed manner to the Council.
To comply with the legislation, Council resolved to link registration renewal directly to Continuing Professional Development. The CPD policy was circulated for public and voluntary association feedback before approval for implementation on 24 November 2005, with effect from 1 January 2006.
The policy has been formalised into a set of rules, published as Board Notice 131 in Government Gazette No. 28328 on 23 December 2005. These rules, effective from 1 January 2006, outline the CPD requirements and the process for registration renewal.
